Dr. Rong Zhao is Director of the Center of Excellence in Wireless Information Technology (CEWIT) and a faculty member within the Department of Computer Science at Stony Brook University.
At CEWIT, Rong is responsible for the center's overall performance and success in conducting collaborative research, commercializing emerging technologies, and cultivating the next-generation workforce. In addition to managing CEWIT's portfolio of projects, programs and partnerships, Rong is leading the Center to define, implement, and execute strategies to pursue funding opportunities and expand CEWIT's partner network.
Rong has more than 25 years of research and development experience. Over the past 12 years, he served on the leadership team for two National Science Foundation Industry-University Cooperative Research Centers (IUCRC); first as Deputy Director of the Center for Dynamic Data Analytics (CDDA) and then Managing Director of the Center for Visual and Decision Informatics (CVDI). His areas of expertise include databases, machine learning, data visualization, medical imaging, mobile computing, and remote sensing. Since joining Stony Brook University, Rong has led over 200 funded projects, published peer-reviewed papers in major journals and international conferences, and authored chapters in several books.
Rong has served as a software architect for several tech startups developing enterprise software, advanced data analytics, and innovative healthcare solutions. He has provided consulting services to several Fortune 500 companies and served as an advisor for companies in various industries.
Rong Zhao holds a PhD in computer science from Wayne State University and an MBA from Stony Brook University.
