Stony Brook University's Expansion/Reactivation Process

The expansion process for Fraternities and Sororities is different from the new club process.

Please note, the University is not currently accepting applications for expansion or reactivation at this time.

Consideration for Opening Expansion and Reactivation

Phase 1: A committee comprised of faculty, staff, and students will determine whether it is an appropriate time for the university to open for expansion/reactivation. The committee will determine whether it opens or not for fraternity or sorority expansion, broadly, or within a specific council. The decision of the committee will be reflected on the expansion/reactivation page for the given semester.

Expansion/Reactivation Application

Phase 2: All submissions must be delivered via email to sbufsl@stonybrook.edu. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis by the expansion/reactivation committee. Organizations will be notified if they will proceed to the next phase. Please note that all information requested in our recognition policy must be submitted for full consideration. Applications received after the required date will not be accepted.

On-Campus Interview and Presentation

Phase 3: Organizations invited to campus will participate in a half-day interview. The on-campus interview will consist of an overview and debrief of the day, a presentation hosted by the organization open to the campus community with a Q&A, an interview with Student Life and Fraternity and Sorority Life Senior Leadership, and optional opportunities for a campus tour and tabling in one of our campus life centers.

Expansion/Reactivation Notification and Timelines

Phase 4: The committee members will submit their recommendations to the chair of the committee. Organizations invited to join the Stony Brook community will work alongside Fraternity and Sorority Life to determine an appropriate timeline for integration into the fraternity and sorority community. Organizations not invited to join after their interview and presentation (Phase 3) will have the opportunity to meet with the chair of the committee to receive feedback.
