This collection of reports and resources was produced as part of the New York State Education Department grant to Stony Brook University for its initiative, Strengthening Diversity in Educational Leadership. These comprehensive reports examine the landscape of educational leadership preparation in New York State and provide insights into creating more diverse leadership pipelines for K-12 schools.

Developing Leaders for K-12 Family and Community Engagement: Seminar Series Report

This report documents a six-session seminar series designed for the next generation of school leaders — current teachers, teacher leaders, and assistant principals. The series focused on developing effective and realistic methods for engaging families and communities in K-12 education and student success. Participants gained greater acumen and innovation in creating family and community partnerships for school improvement. The report includes participant feedback and proposes a future toolkit-style book to expand the reach of this important work in family and community engagement.

This comprehensive directory provides a centralized resource for prospective students and stakeholders seeking information on educational leadership programs across New York State. The directory includes 37 active School Building Leader (SBL) and combined SBL/School District Leader (SDL) programs, with complete contact information, certifications offered, and institutional details for each program. The directory was developed through systematic research conducted from August 2023 to January 2025 in collaboration with faculty from Stony Brook University, City College of New York, Fordham University, Hofstra University, and St. John's University.

A Model Educational Leadership Program

This report documents the successful implementation of a statewide online leadership preparation pipeline for underrepresented groups. Two cohorts of 28 graduate students participated in a culturally responsive, equity-driven program aligned with the NYSED Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education Framework and Professional Standards for Educational Leaders. The report highlights a 100% pass rate for licensing exams, expanded access to leadership preparation, and the development of stronger professional networks across New York State.

Expanding Diversity in New York State's K-12 Leadership Pipeline: Challenges and Solutions, by Region

Drawing from seven regional Town Hall-style discussions with educational stakeholders, this report addresses the dearth of racial diversity among K-12 school and district leaders in New York State. Participants identified common challenges in recruiting and retaining leaders of color and shared locally developed innovative solutions. The report presents collaborative strategies to draw more leaders of color into education, reduce implicit bias in interview processes, and support new leaders on the job.
