research community about the research funding landscape across key topic areas. Our
Strategic Research Initiatives team provided insight into the rapidly shifting funding
environment using policy briefs, budgetary priorities, and relevant legislation. We
highlighted federal and state priorities in the current and upcoming years to help
Stony Brook researchers develop strategies for pursuing funding in a rapidly shifting
environment. This series is moderated by Mónica Bugallo, Interim Vice President for
Research & Innovation. This event was the third in the series, focused on the artificial
intelligence landscape.
SUNY AI Symposium at Stony Brook: Scaling the NY AI Innovation Ecosystem
April 14 to 15, 2026
The SUNY AI Symposium at Stony Brook convened leading AI experts from across New York
State and beyond. This two-day event offered a dynamic opportunity to engage with
cutting-edge developments in artificial intelligence and its applications in numerous
industrial and societal sectors. The symposium highlighted AI thought leaders, SUNY
researchers, educators, and industry partners who are advancing discovery, driving
innovation, and catalyzing economic growth.
Translating the Funding Landscape for Stony Brook Researchers: Semiconductors and
Microelectronics
March 9, 2026

This virtual workshop series was designed to assist early-career faculty in developing
competitive proposals for the National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early Career
Development Program (CAREER), due July 22, 2026. In addition to the workshops, OPD
offered a suite of services to provide individualized proposal development support.

Winter 2025 NIH R-Series Academy
This academy was open to all Stony Brook faculty interested in learning more about
the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) most awarded grant mechanisms, the R-Series.
Over the course of four mixed-format workshops, participants gained a comprehensive
understanding of the NIH’s R mechanisms and learned how to prepare competitive proposals
successfully.

SBU / BNL / EPRI Electric Grid Resilience Workshop
June 10, 2024
Researchers from Stony Brook University, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and Electric
Power Research Institute, as well as key partners such as experts from other research
organizations, utility companies, industry partners, incubators and accelerators,
and other government and community organizations, convened for a full-day workshop
to forge new use-inspired research projects on a series of pressing technical challenges
related to electric grid resilience. As part of this workshop, participants also explored
innovative solutions for workforce development, energy justice, and economic impact
considerations.

Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers (MRSEC) Seed Grant Networking Event
March 20, 2024
The Office of the Vice President for Research, the Office of the Provost, the College
of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the College of Arts and Sciences announced
a seed grant program to fund collaborative efforts between researchers at Stony Brook
University seeking to apply to NSF’s Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers
(MRSEC) program. To prepare for the next solicitation announcement, Stony Brook University
launched this campus-wide seed grant program to help form competitive Interdisciplinary
Research Groups (IRGs). To encourage participation from researchers across all the
colleges/schools on campus, the Office of Proposal Development hosted this networking
event to bring researchers together.

Quantum Immersion Workshop

The goal of this workshop was to build a Quantum Information Science (QIS) community
of researchers between Stony Brook University, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and
other partners. This workshop showcased state-of-the-art QIS research and provided
a forum to discuss opportunities to engage in QIS research.

This workshop provided attendees with a solid understanding of the creative and organizational
aspects of preparing a competitive NIH K99-R00 application. Attendees also had the
opportunity to network with past K99-R00 awardees and were paired up for one-on-one
mentoring throughout the application process.
