The Office for Research and Innovation invites applications to the SUNY Brain Institute (SBI) RFP. Through this RFP, SUNY will seed the Thematic Module focused on Age-Related Brain Disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, neuroinflammation, and cognitive decline. The goal of this pilot competition is to successfully establish a coordinated Hub–Node structure supported by shared research infrastructure, that serves investigators across the SUNY system. Stony Brook University may submit up to TWO (2) proposals.
Please see below for details. If you are interested in applying, you must submit a pre-application via the SBI Portal in InfoReady by Monday, February 23, 2026 at 9:00 am. Pre-applications for internal review and selection must be uploaded to the portal as a single PDF document.
WHAT DOES IT FUND: State capital funds are restricted to long-term investments in physical research infrastructure, including but not limited to Major scientific instruments and equipment; Laboratory renovations and facility improvements; and Durable infrastructure supporting shared research capabilities. Within a given Module, an institution may serve either as an Anchoring Hub or as a Node, but not both. Institutions may participate in different Modules in future SBI competitions, if additional funds are allocated in future years. All proposals must be endorsed by the campus Vice President for Research (or equivalent officer) and the Campus President.
APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS: The Module Director (PI of the Anchoring Hub), must possess demonstrated management experience, particularly in the administration of large, shared research facilities or multi-institutional programs, to ensure effective governance and sustainability of the Hub. All senior and key personnel associated with the Anchoring Hub and all participating Nodes should show prior experience relevant to the goals of the SUNY Brain Institute (SBI), including demonstrated expertise in managing shared research facilities, leading large interdisciplinary teams, or overseeing multi-institutional data governance.
AWARD: Period of Performance: Three (3) years.
- Anchoring Hub Award (One (1) Award): State Capital Funds $4–6 million;
- Supporting Node Award (minimum of one (1) Award): State Capital Funds $2–4 million;
- Targeted Node Award (minimum of one (1) Award): State Capital Funds $0.5–1.5 million.
COST SHARE: There is a required institutional cost share, which will be discussed upon completion of the internal competition.
SPONSOR DEADLINE: April 6, 2026
A complete pre-application should comprise of the following:
- Letter of Intent (no more than 1 page) that describes the Research Goals: Define the scientific or technical focus of the Hub or Node. Identify up to three (3) specific, measurable aims that guide the proposed activities.
- Overall Component (no more than 1 page): If applying for the Anchoring Hub, you must also describe the statewide scientific and infrastructural vision of the Module. Explain how your vision of the anchoring Hub will function as an integrated system of nodes rather than independent projects. Demonstrate how this shared infrastructure will advance SUNY-wide neuroscience capacity beyond a single institution.
- High-level budget and budget justification (no more than 1 page) Please note, budgets should not show consumables, routine operating expenses, software licenses, or personnel costs.
- CV of Director or Node Principal Investigators (PIs)
