Breast Cancer Alliance Research Grants Program

The Office for Research and Innovation invites applications to the Breast Cancer Alliance Research Grants Program. The purpose of the program is to provide seed money – scientific venture capital – to fund innovative breast cancer research with emphasis on programs that have not yet qualified for federal grants. Stony Brook University can submit ONE application to either the Young Investigator Grants (YIG) program or Exceptional Project Grant (XP) program.

DISCIPLINES: Breast Cancer Research
WHAT DOES IT FUND:
- Young Investigator Grants (YIG): This grant is intended to help advance the careers of young researchers who do not yet have their own major grant support, but who design and conduct their own independent research projects with a focus on breast cancer.
- Exceptional Project Grant (XP): This award recognizes creative, unique and innovative research by clinical doctors and research scientists at any stage of their careers, including post docs, whose current proposal is focused on breast cancer.
APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS:
- Young Investigator Grants (YIG): Applicants must (i) not have held a tenure track faculty or tenure track research position for more than four years following completion of their training, as of March 1, 2027; (ii) not have been or are not a principal investigator on an NIH R01 or equivalent national/international non-mentored award as of March 1, 2027; and (iii) dedicate at least 50% of their work effort to research.
- Exceptional Project Grant (XP): No restrictions
AWARD: Indirect costs, which are included in the award, must be limited to 8% of total direct costs.
- Young Investigator Grants (YIG): $125,000 over 2 years
- Exceptional Project Grant (XP): $100,000 over 1 year
COST SHARE: Not required
SPONSOR DEADLINE: LOI due March 31, 2026; if selected to move forward, full applications are due July 30, 2026
A complete pre-application should comprise of the following:
- Letter of Intent (no more than one page) that outlines the research aim(s) and methods, and includes a brief discussion of the project’s potential impact.
- CV (in current NIH biosketch format)
