Coastal and Hydraulic Engineering Research Laboratory (CHERL)

This lab provides extensive research opportunities in coastal engineering, fluid mechanics, and hydraulics within the field of civil engineering. Equipped with a state-of-the-art combined wave and bi-directional current flume measuring 80 feet in length, 5 feet in width, and 5 feet in depth, as well as advanced instrumentation, the lab supports experiments on coastal structures, beach morphology, marine and hydrokinetic energy, open channel flow, and other applications. Collaborative Robots for Occupational Safety and Sustainability (CROSS) Laboratory

At CROSS Lab, we promote safety and sustainability in human-robot collaboration in workspaces. We focus on developing learning-based approaches to advance robot technologies and addressing the challenges of their occupational applications in construction, manufacturing, and warehouses. Specific research area includes:

  • Human-robot collaboration
  • Imitation learning and reinforcement learning
  • Computer vision and sensor fusion
  • BIM, digital twins, and extended reality
  • Energy modeling and energy consumption

High-Performance Supercomputing Cluster

Our department has recently commissioned a high-performance computing cluster named Zagros, designed for advanced computational research. Zagros features 76 Intel Xeon E5-2670 nodes with a total of 1,216 cores. Each node is equipped with 128GB of RAM, resulting in a system-wide memory capacity of 9.728TB. The nodes are interconnected through a 40Gbps InfiniBand network, ensuring low-latency and high-throughput communication. Storage is supported by a Lustre system, offering 72GB of usable space, also connected via InfiniBand for optimized performance. PI: Ali Khosronejad

Lightweight and Multifunctional Structures Laboratory

The Lightweight and Multifunctional Structures Laboratory focuses on the development and meso-scale characterization of engineered materials (e.g., hybrids, composites, metamaterials), lightweight structures (e.g., slender, thin-walled designs), and multifunctional structures (e.g., smart, adaptive, multi-physics systems). The lab is equipped to conduct experimental research in areas such as engineered materials for energy management, energy harvesting materials and devices, slender thin-walled structures, and structural health monitoring. PI: Rigoberto Burgueño.

Dynamic Structures Laboratory

The Dynamic Structures Laboratory is dedicated to:

  1. The development and experimental testing of innovative, adaptive, and shape-morphing structures.
  2. Experimental research in structural dynamics and wave physics.

Geosystems Engineering Laboratory

This lab supports the preparation, characterization, testing, and visualization of geosystems across scales, from nanometers to meters. It is equipped with advanced tools, including XRD, XRF, BET, and TGA, for nanoscale analysis of mineralogy and pore spaces. Two fully automated triaxial systems enable simulation of shallow and deep geosystems under in-situ temperature, stress, and flow conditions. Additionally, the photoporomechanics and ring shear testing setups offer unique and innovative methods to probe the intrinsic physics of geosystems with strong fluid coupling. PI: Wei Li.

New York State Center for Clean Water Technology

The NYS Center for Clean Water Technology focuses on driving business growth and job creation through the development of innovative water technologies, with an initial emphasis on on-site wastewater solutions. This collaborative effort brings together Civil Engineering and the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, working in coordination with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, Suffolk County, and the Town of Southampton.

Infrastructure, Transportation and Security Center (ITSC)

ITSC is dedicated to enhancing the security of infrastructure and transportation systems across Long Island. It is the result of a collaborative effort between the Departments of Civil Engineering and Computer Science, alongside teams from Farmingdale State College, Maritime College, and Nassau Community College.
