Chris Astefanous is currently the technology director for the Power Conversion and Control business of GE Aviation Systems. The organization is located at two sites: Ronkonkoma, NY and Pompano Beach, FL. In this role he is responsible for conducting technology and manufacturing maturation for new products. He received his Masters of Science and Bachelors degree, in Mechanical Engineering, from Stony Brook University. Since graduation he has been involved in all phases of complex systems development in industries ranging across satellite communications, particle accelerators, and electrical power systems.

Urban Air Mobility: The Technology and Challenges
GE Aviation is a world-leading provider of jet engines, electrical power and avionics systems for commercial and military aircraft. The GE Aviation Systems team supplies generation, conversion, and distribution products that are electrifying the future of flight. As the world demands sustainable transportation methods for people and cargo, Urban Air Mobility has taken center stage for numerous venture startups as well as established aviation organizations looking to capitalize on this disruptive industry trend. In this talk we will be reviewing a typical electrical propulsion system, the technologies that enable electric flight, and discuss the challenges of flight safety certification with respect to hardware and software.
