Research Security Training
Who is required to complete research security training?
Research security training must be completed by
- All faculty involved in externally and internally funded research activities, and
- Any non-faculty that meet the definition of “covered individual” (42 USC § 19237(1)).
Research security training is highly recommended for
- All faculty, staff, students, and others that are involved in any international engagements.
The Policy on International Engagements has been updated to include a requirement for Research Security Training, individuals who are required to comply with the campus policy should complete training as soon as possible, but no later than August 31, 2025. Individuals involved in federally sponsored research may have additional training requirements (such as annual training).
How is research security training completed?
Collaborative Institutional Training Institute (CITI)
- Research security training is completed in CITI*
- Important: Completion in CITI will create an institutional record of the completed training.
*CITI is available to all SBU faculty, staff and students - Use the Log In Through My Organization option and use your NetID and password.**Directions: Select "Add a Course", then "I want to complete the Research Security Course at this time", then select the appropriate training option, select "Next".
** If you don't have a CITI account, you will be prompted to create one.
Which research security course must be completed?

Individuals are required to complete one of the following research security trainings in CITI:

- Research Security Training (Condensed) Course (approximately one-hour ) OR
- Research Security Training Course (approximately three hours) OR
- Research Security Advanced Refresher Course (approximately two hours)
Specific research security training requirements for federally sponsored researchers and other "covered individuals"
Federal sponsors continue to implement research security training requirements.
Any of the Research Security Trainings in CITI will satisfy federal sponsor requirements. However, there may be additional requirements from specific agencies and/or projects. Therefore researchers who elect to complete the Research Security Training (Condensed) Course may be required to take additional training by a sponsor. Researchers should review the program announcements/calls for proposals to confirm any additional requirements.
