Kristi Henderson

Chief of Staff to the Provost
Associate Provost for Strategy and Communications
Kristi Henderson serves as the Chief of Staff to the Provost and Associate Provost for Strategy and Communications at Stony Brook University, joining the university on July 1, 2022. She brings a wealth of experience from similar positions at other prominent public flagships, having previously served at the University of Connecticut as Chief of Staff and Assistant Vice Provost for Strategic Communications, and at the University of Kansas as Chief of Staff and Communications in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.

At Stony Brook, Kristi is a highly valued strategist and trusted advisor to the Provost and his leadership team, fostering collaboration across the university with deans, vice provosts, vice presidents, and other key leaders. She excels at fostering meaningful collaboration across the university, ensuring the seamless coordination of activities and priorities that drive strategic initiatives forward, as well as collaborative resolution of complex issues. 

Her portfolio is broad, covering initiatives and issues that span all areas reporting to the Provost: five schools and colleges, University Libraries, undergraduate and graduate education, continuing and online education, enrollment management, global affairs, faculty development, academic policy, curriculum management, research centers, an arts center, and educational effectiveness. She consistently maintains a current understanding of all these areas, as well as broader trends in higher education, allowing her to offer insightful advice to the Provost and senior academic leaders, and to represent them as needed. 

Particular areas of responsibility include oversight of leadership meetings and retreats, strategic initiatives, communications, issues management, executive searches, community forums, and supervision of staff who manage project coordination, communications, and executive support. 

Kristi holds an MBA and a Bachelor's in Journalism from the University of Kansas.
