Clinical Instructor - Physician Assistant

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an approved US PA program, current NYS license/registration.  Two years of experience in cardiothoracic specialty to include two years appropriate experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience as Research Coordinator for clinical trials, including preparing IRB submission, compliance, screening and recruitment, data abstraction for clinical and trail registries.  Cardiothoracic intensive care experience including responsibility for key aspects of management of pre- and post- operative cardiothoracic patients, recognition and management of complications.

Responsibilities & Requirements

The Physician Assistant will be responsible for providing direct patient care for the TAVR clinic patients.  The PA will coordinate all aspects of outpatient care in collaboration with the Cardiac surgeon.  They will participate in any research studies being conducted in this patient population.  

Provides direct care to TAVR patients under the supervision of attending Cardiologist.

  • Performs approved diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for patients on the TAVR Service.  In collaboration with other TAVR Physician Assistant, coordinates all aspects of in-hospital care and discharge planning with the nursing, medical and hospital staff.
  • Makes referrals to other health care providers and/or consults the physician for further definitive therapy.  
  • Maintains ongoing communication with physician collaborator and Associate Director of Nursing relative to select aspects of patient care or administrative issues.
  • Maintain and enter data into national registries.

TAVR Research

  • Participates in the research process by assisting with/conducting research protocols in conjunction with the Cardiothoracic Surgeon and Cardiologist.
  • Applies new findings to current practice and disseminates research findings throughout the Stony Brook University Hospital community and beyond.
  • Participates in the presentation of scientific papers, workshops and seminars.
  • Participates in the development and review of outcome data to measure the quality of patient card.
  • Assess eligibility of patients to become study participants; recruit suitable patients as study participants and obtain informed consent.  May include various screening processes including chart review, screening patients admitted to the hospital.  Personally discuss the details involved with all enrolled patients.  Answer patient questions regarding procedures and protocols as required.
  • Submit protocols, amendments, notices and terminations to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for review and approval.  Revise protocol and consent forms as needed to comply with Federal, State, and IRS guidelines.  Responsible for reporting all adverse events.  Assist with the analysis of the patient data ensuring that all required components are accurately entered into the various databases.
Cardiothoracic intensive care duties including responsibility for key aspects of management of pre- and post- operative cardiothoracic patients, recognition and management of complications.

  • Manage the patients in the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit and when necessary evaluate patients on the nursing and emergency floors.
  • On-Call duties as determined by the department.

Special Notes

This is a non-tenure track position.  FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.  Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.  Anticipated Start Date: As soon as possible.
