OPLITE - “Technology is Now” Career Fair Successful IBM, Verizon, CA, Cisco, Motorola, and Many Others Inspire Students

The CEWIT-OPLITE “Technology is Now” annual career fair to raise awareness of Technology and Engineering careers, held on April 1st at Smithtown High School, was nothing less than a smashing success. Approximately 350 people attended the event, about 200 of which were students. Thanks so much to the Smithtown School District, Smithtown Advisory Board and legions of Smithtown IT and administrative folks who made this a smooth and memorable occasion. We could not have done this without the help of literally dozens of volunteers. We were also thrilled by the list of corporate technology presenters, which featured IBM, Microsoft, Cisco Systems, Northrop- Grumman, BAE Systems, Game Builder's Academy, Motorola, Stony Brook Motorsports, Underwriters Labs, Verizon Wireless, Viacom/MTV Networks, Bascom, American Medical Alert Corporation, and CA. It was a great night for students and parents and the feedback we have received ranged from wow to WOW!!! While the students soaked up knowledge from the tech demonstrations and demonstrators, parents were treated to break out sessions on a variety of topics ranging from cyber-security at home, to finding one’s Career DNA. The evening began with a bold, technology-rich presentation to students and parents, which included videos we have created at CEWIT as well as our passionate plea to consider these career paths more carefully. The feedback here was also outstanding. In short, the Tech Fair impacted the lives of hundreds of people. All told, the OPLITE program www.cewit.org/oplite, has had the opportunity to talk to literally thousands of students in the last 6 months as well as over 500 parents about the tech worker shortage and the need for regional students to consider technology and engineering as areas of study. Congratulations to Judy Murrah, Scott Passeser and all the boards, committees and schools for bringing the tech job market to the attention of so many this year.
