OVERVIEW
As computing becomes embedded in the very fabric of our society, the exponential growth and advances in cheap, high-speed communication infrastructures allow for unprecedented levels of global information exchange and interaction. As a result, new market forces emerge, that propel forward a fundamental, cost-efficient paradigm shift in the way computing is deployed and delivered. Computing has finally become a pay-per-use utility delivered at a distance by a “cloud” provider. For businesses, outsourced commoditized computing carries the promise of tremendous freedom, on-demand growth and opportunities, very similar in nature to the 19th century dawn of the electricity utility. Yet, numerous technological and socio-economic challenges remain to be tackled before wide-spread adoption, including issues of interoperability, cyber-security, regulatory compliance, scalability, energy, integration with legacy systems, as well as privacy and confidentiality concerns. The CEWIT Cloud Computing Symposium will bring together IT researchers, practitioners and business professionals to discuss ongoing work in cloud computing research, its commercial adoption and the challenges ahead.
