Long Island and other parts of New York State have tended to dominate prestigious science competitions in recent decades, and this season has been no exception. Stony Brook University additionally noted for mentoring 21 of students in a range of departments and disciplines as Applied Mathematics & Statistics, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, and Medicine.

January 8, 2014 - In The News - New York Pumps $105M into NY Genome Center, Univ. of Buffalo Genomic Medicine Partnership
SUNY Buffalo’s own New York State Center of Excellence makes its mark in today’s news as it prepares to partner with the New York Genome Center to advance personalized medicine research and businesses in the state of the New York. The CoE in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences was noted for its genomic medicine and computational capabilities, containing over one million medical records from regional patients that may be combined with genomic data from the NYGC's research programs.

January 6, 2014 - Stony Brook Computer Science Professor Quantifies Some Elements of Writing Style That Differentiate Successful Fiction
Professor Yejin Choi and colleagues propose using computers to predict literary success through the examination of the quantitative connection between writing style and successful literature. Based on novels across different genres, the group investigated the predictive power of statistical stylometry in discriminating successful literary works, and identified the stylistic elements that are more prominent in successful writings.

January 6, 2014 - Charmtech Labs to Exhibit at CES2014
Housed in CEWIT’s Incubator, Charmtech Labs LLC was founded in 2010 by a group of computer science professors and Ph.D. students who set out to remove the barriers between people and information. Their flagship product, Capti Narrator, the screen-reading technology that revolutionizes the way people consume digital content will be demoed at CES2014, the world’s largest tradeshow for consumer technology to be held this week in Las Vegas.

In the turn to big data analytics, The Economic Times article regards Centers of Excellence (CoEs) to offer the most advantages and fewest limitations. “A well-functioning CoE enables cross-business-unit access and data-sharing. At the corporate level, the CoE serves as the go-to organization for analytics strategy and insight support. It sets the road map, and establishes and maintains privacy policies.”

November 19, 2013 - Korean Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) Delegation at CEWIT
A delegation from KIST visits CEWIT to participate in number of research presentations by both Stony Brook University professors and directors and KIST representatives on topics as sensors, robotics, and visualization. Their visit also included Reality Deck and CAVE demonstrations, ending in a trip to the Advanced Energy Center.

November 13th, 2013 - Stony Brook University Breaks Ground on $194M Research Building
The groundbreaking ceremony was one of the many stops on the Long Island Regional Economic Development bus tour that began at CEWIT for a demonstration of the Reality Deck. The Council also visited the neighboring Advanced Energy Center for a look at Dr. Esther Takeuchi’s lab and an announcement by Governor Cuomo on Thermolift, a Stony Brook University technology that will now expand its operations at the Center.

November 13th, 2013 - Governor Cuomo Participates in Groundbreaking on Medical and Research Translation Building at Stony Brook University
Featuring photos and videos of the Governor’s visit to Stony Brook University for the MART Groundbreaking, Reality Deck demonstration at CEWIT, lab visits at the Advanced Energy Center, and a tour of the NSLS II at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

August 14, 2013 - CEWIT Lends Insight to International Educators
A group of 14 Principals and Vice Principals from all over China visited Stony Brook University to learn about US secondary and higher education. As part of their week long training program, the group stopped at CEWIT to tour the facility and learn about the numerous research and internship opportunities offered to University students through the Center and its various incubator companies. Their agenda included also visits to local high schools and Ivy League Universities in the tri-state area with incorporated workshops on international student requirements and higher educational systems.

August 6, 2013 - Seminar: Grow Your Business with Stony Brook University Interns
The informational seminar, held at the CEWIT Incubator, instructed company executives on the benefits of hiring student interns this fall and the outlets in which to successfully do so. Small businesses and established companies alike learned how to operate the University-based job listing/recruiting system, skills sets for developing internship programs, opportunities for connecting with students through special events, and understanding of the internship process at large. Hosted by Stony Brook University’s Career Center, the seminars focus on strengthening the relationship between industry and academia here at CEWIT and the University.

Due to the overwhelming interest in the CEWIT2013, the deadline for abstract and poster submission will be extended to August 1, 2013. The extended deadline will allow for those additional contributions. June 24, 2013 - Suffolk County's Police Explorers
Suffolk County's Police Explorers visited CEWIT this week for an opportunity to learn about technology careers and experience some of the work and research involved in these fields. The Explorers are a group of 14-20 year old kids interested in law enforcement and civic leadership. One of the main purposes of the program is to provide positive experiences, building knowledgeable, more responsible adults. Their trip to CEWIT involved a demo at the Reality Deck, presentations, and an extensive tour through both CEWIT and the Advanced Energy Center next door.
